My name is Cyril Hachemi, I’m from Montpellier, France and I am 22 years old. I am doing a Master in Chemistry at the Ecole National Supérieure de Chimie de Montpellier, ENSCM. Compared to Dutch equivalents, my study is more or less a combination of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. After I finished high school I started taking courses in mathematics, physics and chemistry. Of these exact subjects, chemistry appeals to me the most because it is very tangible. I also like physics and mathematics, but I don't see myself doing any research in that. I am particulary interested in green chemistry, that is why I chose water technology. What I like about water technology most is the fact that it is a very broad subject in which you get to interact many different people and disciplines.
When I had to find an internship, I just started looking on the internet randomly, searching for water technology. Through Google I found the CEW in The Netherlands and decided to send them an e-mail. I was invited for a job interview and the rest is history. The project I am working on is about producing energy from the mix of salt and fresh water at river mouths, without the use of membranes. What I like about my internship most, is the fact that you get to do everything from scratch. In the beginning I had some trouble getting used to the new environment and finding my way in the Water Application Centre (WAC). But the people there and at CEW are very helpful and always available when you have questions. I live in the city centre of Leeuwarden in a student house. Leeuwarden is a nice city, but a bit too quiet for me. Quite a difference with my home town Montpellier where, no matter what time of the day you go outside, there is always people in the streets and activity going on.
My internship at CEW ends in August and in October I will start a PhD about removing micro plastics from surface water in Australia. I would certainly recommend an internship at the CEW for several reasons. First of all you get your own project in which you can act very autonomously. Whenever you need help, there is always people available. And besides your assignment, you get a lot of advice in writing reports and presenting through the courses offered by Corry Hoekstra, lecturer in Communication at Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences. The most important lesson I learned so far during my internship, is about being patient and to deal with stress. Indeed, things can happen slowly, but it is hard for me to wait as I like it when everything is done fast and efficiently (especially with paper works). Now I am more relax, and I just keep my to-do list updated daily.
My name is Déjanire Barnier, I am 22 years old and currently doing my internship at CEW. I am originally from Montpellier in France where I study Chemical Engineering at the National Graduate School of Chemistry of Montpellier. I chose Environmental Chemistry as my major. I was looking for an internship in the northern part of Europe, like Germany, the Netherlands or England, and I like to work in the water remediation. So CEW seemed like a great place for my internship!
I am currently working on a project about nutrient management in greenhouses. For this project I am working on a measuring instrument: a capillary electrophoresis to analyse ions that are in the supplying water. These ions are nutrients for the plants and the plants need a certain amount of nutrients, depending on their age. The instrument is being created in order to find a quick and easy way to analyse the ions. Eventually greenhouse owners can use the analysis to supply nutrients for plants more effectively.
When I moved to the Netherlands, my first impression was that it is a very peaceful place. Everyone is very friendly and I often get greeted in the streets. After I finish my internship at CEW I will continue the second year of my master and then I will hopefully start working shortly after. Then I would like to be in charge of projects while still working with chemistry and water treatment.
It of course depends on what your interests are, but I would definitely recommend an internship at CEW if you want to do an interesting research. It is a nice learning environment with lots of people from different cultures.
My name is Harrison Nabaala, I am from Kenya and 28 years old. I am currently in the final part of my master programme in Water Technology at Wetsus Academy. I wanted to specialize in water technology because of my situation at home. Back in Kenya there is a shortage of water and drinking water is not safe. We drank dirty water from the ponds which, as a child, I thought was normal. We did not know about the dangers of dirty drinking water and I saw some of my friends getting ill from it.
I started studying environmental engineering which had some water related courses already. After that I knew for sure I wanted to study more about water technology. I finished my thesis at Wetsus and decided I wanted to develop my expertise further at the CEW. Here I get to do a literature research on advanced catalytic oxidation processes. The process involves the use of ozon, hydrogen peroxide and a top catalyst. This catalyst is normally being used in the automotive industry to reduce the production of indissoluble products like carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide and we want to find out if this technique can be used in waste water treatment as well.
What I like about my internship at CEW is that we have an international community here. The CEW has an environment with students and professionals from all over the world where you can share ideas with each other. There are so many options and diverse projects to choose from, so you have the option to do what you like to do at CEW.
Mijn naam is Stefan Drenth, ik zit in het vierde en laatste jaar van de opleiding Communicatie aan NHL Stenden Hogeschool en doe momenteel mijn afstudeerstage bij het CEW. Ik kom oorspronkelijk uit Zuidwolde, ben momenteel woonachtig in Leeuwarden en 20 jaar oud. Het grootste deel van mijn vrije tijd besteed ik aan illustratie, animatie, videogames, films kijken en hardlopen.
Tijdens mijn stage richt ik mij vooral op communicatie over hoe leuk en interessant watertechnologie en de projecten die de CEW organiseert, zijn. Daarnaast doe ik onderzoek naar hoe en waar studenten het meest effectief kunnen worden bereikt voor deze projecten.
Ik heb voor het CEW gekozen omdat ik het tof vind om door middel van communicatie bij te dragen aan een doel dat belangrijk is voor de hele wereld: watertechnologie bevorderen. Na een aantal eerdere sollicitaties waarbij ik keer op keer dacht “Dit is het ook niet”, werd ik getipt op de vacature bij het CEW. Ik voelde mij hier meteen welkom en de opdracht sprak mij erg aan.
Ik hoop met mijn stage te bereiken dat we een hoop nieuwe talenten voor zowel het CEW als andere organisaties binnen WaterCampus gaan werven. Daarnaast hoop ik een succesvol onderzoek uit te voeren en natuurlijk veel leuke content te maken met het team!
"My name is Sibghat Ullah, I am 26 years old and I am from Stuttgart in Germany. I am currently in my third year of the Master Water Resources Engineering and Management. I am an engineer and engineering technology has always captured my interest. I chose for water technology because water is an essential part of life and I thought it could need innovations more than other fields of study.
A course director from my university recommended CEW to me and I immediately got interested. CEW is a nice place for learning and developing a professional attitude. It’s not just learning but also a lot of fun! We have monthly events where you get to know all of your colleagues.
During my internship I got to work on the WaterWin project in which we developed an atmospheric water generation system. This system is being developed to extract water from the atmosphere in remote areas like deserts. During this project I got to analyse the system beforehand, using the COMSOL multi physics model. After that my main role was the modelling of the system.
I would definitely recommend an internship at CEW. You get to work on very interesting, ongoing projects in a professional environment. I also got good guidance when necessary and the international experience was really good. I really enjoyed my time here and am now heading back to Stuttgart to finish my study."
Waarom heb je gekozen voor watertechnologie?
In Nederland is heel veel water. We vechten als Nederlanders al eeuwenlang om droge voeten te houden. Desondanks is de beschikbaarheid van voldoende schoon drinkwater in Nederland niet vanzelfsprekend, laat staan in heel veel andere landen. Dat heeft me altijd gefascineerd. Daarbij is watertechnologie een hele brede specialisatie die ook het werkveld van de ecologie en de duurzame energie raakt. Wat wil je nog meer als milieukundestudent?
Hoe kwam je in aanraking met het CEW?
Via een presentatie van Maarten Trilsbeek, projectmanager bij het CEW. Hij kwam bij ons op school vertellen over de specialisatie watertechnologie en over de projecten van het CEW, die ingevuld worden met studenten uit de zogenaamde watergerelateerde opleidingen.
Welke projecten heb je gedaan tijdens je stage?
Ik heb gewerkt aan twee totaal verschillende projecten: het Solaq WaterWin-project en aan het Anammox-T-project. Dit laat heel mooi zien hoe breed en afwisselend het vakgebied watertechnologie is. Bij het Solaq-project is het doel om water uit de lucht te halen met behulp van een atmosferische water generator en zonne-energie. Deze atmosferische water generator is ontwikkeld door Solaq BV. Ik mocht mij binnen dit project bezighouden met de realisatie van de testopstelling van deze atmosferische watergenerator op labschaal. Vooral de contacten met leveranciers van onderdelen waren erg leerzaam. Zo’n leverancier staat soms best ver af van het eindproduct. Dat maakt dat je gedwongen wordt om goed na te denken over de realisatie van de testopstelling en om heel helder te communiceren wat je nodig hebt.
Voor CEW-klant Paques had ik de verantwoordelijkheid voor de Anammox-T-reactor. Dat hield in: onderhouden, schoonmaken en dagelijks analyses uitvoeren. Omdat het een biologisch proces betreft, is er geen dag hetzelfde. Die onvoorspelbaarheid maakte het leuk maar soms ook lastig. Onverklaarbare waardes doen zich natuurlijk altijd voor op momenten dat je druk bent met andere dingen.
Hoe heb je het CEW ervaren als stagebedrijf?
Als een hele fijne leeromgeving waar ik me geen minuut verveeld heb. Dankzij alle internationale collega’s heb ik mijn Engels sterk verbeterd. Je krijgt bij het CEW veel verantwoordelijkheid waardoor je ook zelfstandiger wordt.
Wat ga je nu doen?
Eerst verder met mijn opleiding. Mijn volgende stage mag ik helaas niet bij het CEW doen. In de toekomst wil ik misschien onderzoeker worden. Ik overweeg om na het behalen van mijn Bachelor nog een Master Watertechnologie te gaan doen bij Wetsus Academy.
Wie ben je, wat doe je waar kom je vandaan?
Mijn naam is Tim List, ik ben 21 jaar en kom uit Joure. Momenteel volg ik de opleiding mbo Chemisch Fysisch Analist.
Hoe kwam je bij CEW terecht?
Op aanraden van een docent, hij bracht me in contact met Maarten Trilsbeek, projectmanager bij CEW. Het project waarop ik terechtkwam was eigenlijk bedoeld als hbo-stage, maar bleek goed aan te sluiten bij mijn ambities. Ik ga volgend jaar hbo Chemie doen in Groningen en deze stage was een mooi opstapje.
Wat hield je stage in?
Voor het project Spuiwaterzuivering Glastuinbouw Berlikum mocht ik enkele resultaatrapporten samenvoegen tot een. Dus resultaten ontdubbelen, eenheid aanbrengen in stijl, dat soort dingen. Daarnaast was ik betrokken bij het project over de verwijdering van fosfaat en nitraat uit diverse waterstromen en bij het moerasdakproject, waarvoor ik veel analysewerk heb gedaan.
Wat vond je leuk aan je stage?
Dat er veel zelfstandigheid van je wordt verwacht vond ik fijn. Je hebt daardoor ook de ruimte om je eigen weg te vinden binnen de organisatie. De variatie, niet alleen in werkzaamheden, maar ook in mensen en culturen, was ook prettig. Zo leerde ik bijvoorbeeld meer over Afghanistan door een collega-student uit dat land. De onderlinge sfeer was erg goed en de werkruimte prettig en licht.
Wat vond je minder leuk?
Een van de verslagen die ik had samengevat, bleek achteraf niet goed waardoor ik veel werk voor niets had gedaan. Dat was wel even een tegenslag, maar verder kan ik niets bedenken wat niet leuk was.
Wat is het belangrijkste dat je geleerd hebt tijdens deze stage?
Deze stage heeft mijn toekomstbeeld drastisch veranderd kan ik wel zeggen. Ik ben er achter gekomen dat ik geen analist meer wil worden, maar dat een rol als projectleider me veel meer aanspreekt. Met als inspirerend voorbeeld mijn begeleider bij het Moerasdakproject Bob Laarhoven. Ik vind het veel leuker om me met het grote geheel bezig te houden, in plaats van alleen een klein onderdeel van het onderzoek. Belangrijke informatie die ik meeneem naar mijn vervolgopleiding, Chemie aan de Hanzehogeschool in Groningen. Daarnaast ben ik positiever gaan denken over ondernemen doordat CEW mij de kans bood om deel te nemen aan de WaterCampus Business Challenge. Ik sluit dan ook zeker niet uit dat ik in de toekomst voor mezelf ga beginnen, maar dan wel met een innovatief product waarmee ik de wereld een stukje beter kan maken.
Zou je een stage bij het CEW aanbevelen?
Zeker, maar alleen als je houdt van een uitdaging. En dat bedoel ik in positieve zin: je moet er hard voor werken maar je krijgt er veel voor terug.
I am José Filipe Pinto, 23 years old, and I come from a small village near Braga, in the north of Portugal. I took my first degree in Biochemistry at the University of Porto and I am recently in the last year of my master’s degree in Food Science and Technology at the University of Minho, Portugal. In this master’s degree I saw an opportunity to pursue my studies in an area that I enjoy and a way to gain more experience and knowledge before embarking on the job market.
The first time I heard about CEW was in the middle of the first year of my master’s degree. A teacher asked if any student was willing to take an internship there about water technology, which I accepted. During my internship I was involved in two Paques projects, first Thiopaq and later Annamox. Thiopaq is a desulfurization technology developed by Paques B.V. . Annamox consists in turning ammonium present in waters to gaseous nitrogen, for example in waste waters.
When asked if I wanted to do my internship at CEW, I saw an opportunity to work abroad in a business context, gaining experience and autonomy. Plus waste water treatment is one of the areas that interests me the most, so the theme of this internship pleased me. And of course it was a way to get in touch with a new culture and to travel. The things I enjoyed the most in the projects was being able to make the reactor’s daily maintenance and see how they were developing. There were some bad moments when problems came up but that’s part of the job. During the last 5 months here I’ve learned a lot about water technology, engineering and bioreactor maintenance. I also gained a lot of experience in chemical analyses among other important lab skills and group work.
I would of course recommend working for CEW! At CEW you get to gain a lot of laboratorial experience and have to deal and solve practical problems at first hand. After this internship I feel a lot more prepared to work in the future and more confident in my skills, especially in the laboratory. And of course everyone here makes you feel integrated and part of the family.
Leeuwarden is a cozy and vibrant city in the north of the Netherlands, capital of the province of Fryslân. The province has its own history and somehow its own culture, even within the country. A lot of people here speak not only Dutch but also the Frisian language. And its people seem to be very proud of their roots. Before I arrived in the Netherlands I’ve been told that I would find people from here a bit ‘cold’ but it was the opposite! I felt very well received all the time and everyone was pleasant and joyful. Leeuwarden has many foreign students and the city has good housing opportunities so I chose a student residency to live during my internship.
Now that the internship at CEW is over I am going to return to Portugal and finish my studies. My short term plan is first to finish my master’s degree. After that I have to decide whether I continue to study or start searching for a job.
Indonesian 26 years old I chose this study because I worked on water business before in Indonesia and to support my carreer in the water industry. From Wetsus Academy I got information about CEW as a part of WaterCampus in Leeuwarden. At CEW I worked on the Thiopaq project. This project is about a biological desulfurization technology developed by the company Paques BV. This project is related with optimization of the process technology. I chose the Thiopaq project because I had an experience with it. I did my internship at Paques and worked on the same project at that time.
From my periode at CEW, I learned about the technical research; how to keep the reactor (Thiopaq installation) stable, and observing the small detail change in the reactor’s parameter. Furthermore I learned how many stakeholders can work together such as the Water Application Centre, Van Hall University of Applied Sciences and CEW. Apart from the technical/ research part, I also learned the Dutch language. CEW provides the student to take Dutch courses, and I participated in that.
Leeuwarden is a beautiful city with a beautiful canal honestly. The limit of the city is just its location. In my personal opinion, Leeuwarden little bit far from another city in The Netherlands. For Frisian/ Dutch people (because I cannot see the differences), I think they are nice people and open to foreigner like me. I feel they treat me well. I lived at student housing provided by StudenStay.
After I finish my period here in CEW, I will go back to Indonesia. I will pursue my career there. CEW played a role as a provider of a temporary Job for me. My short-term plan is working in water sector in Indonesia. Understand the water business in Indonesia and in the future, I am planning to become a player in this area. For example make a company, which provide technology and consultancy in water business.
If you like applied research I think CEW is a good place to start. What I like about working in CEW is the environment and the people inside. The people I worked with are really nice and helpful. They help me to settle in Leeuwarden, help me with providing Dutch courses and we did some nice activity together such as going to the bar or barbeque. Moreover, CEW is located in WaterCampus, which provides an opportunity to contact with another people from another company/research center in water area.
Mijn naam is Sigrid, ik ben 36 jaar en ik woon in Ureterp, een kleine plaats bij Drachten. Voor ik naar het CEW kwam, werkte ik al met water, maar op een heel ander gebied: ik was operator op sluizen en -bruggen. Niettemin waren er heel wat watertechnologie-projecten om me heen: Het maken van energie uit zout water versus zoet water, het scheiden van het water in sluizen zodat het zoute water teruggaat naar de Waddenzee en het zoete water teruggaat naar het IJsselmeer etc. Toen ik op zoek moest naar iets nieuws, was een van de eerste onderwerpen waar ik naar keek dan ook watertechnologie. Wat ik daarover hoorde beviel me wel, dus in september 2017 begon ik aan de part-time Associate Degree Sustainable Water Technology bij van Hall Larenstein.
Een vereiste van de opleiding is om een werkplek te hebben die verbonden is met watertechnologie. Om de AD te kunnen volgen, moest ik dus werk vinden op dit gebied. Een leraar vertelde me over CEW en stelde me hier voor. Ondanks dat ik geen ervaring had met watertechnologie, wilde CEW mij een kans geven. Dus in juli 2017 ging ik hier aan de slag.
Op dit moment rond ik het project Biotop af. Biotop maakt natuurlijke zwemvijvers en ze wilden weten of het mogelijk was regenwater te gebruiken in plaats van leidingwater om ze te vullen. De afgelopen maanden heb ik gekeken naar de kwaliteit van regenwater, de wet- en regelgeving van zwemvijvers en methoden om water te zuiveren.
Wat ik erg leuk vond aan dit project, was dat het een duidelijke start en finish had. Toen ik begon met de hoofdvraag, was er al wat informatie, maar het meeste moest ik zelf ontdekken (met alle hulp die ik nodig had natuurlijk). En het eindigde met een presentatie op het IOB-congres en een rapport. Dus ik wist waar ik vandaan kwam en waar ik naartoe zou gaan. Gedurende het hele project had ik de gelegenheid om er achter te komen wat voor mij werkte. Wat ik minder leuk vond, was het lezen van heel veel wetten ... dat was veel moeilijk lezen.
Het belangrijkste dat ik leerde gedurende mijn tijd hier bij het CEW, was om mijn 'back-up-systeem' gebruiken. Om vragen te stellen als ik vastloop, om niet al te lang alleen verder te gaan. Er zijn altijd mensen die vragen kunnen beantwoorden. Maar dat is slechts een voorbeeld van wat ik tot nu toe hier heb geleerd. Daarnaast leer ik veel over watertechnologie, over het werken aan projecten en over mezelf.
Wat mijn toekomstplannen betreft, op korte termijn wil ik alles leren wat ik kan in de 2 jaar van mijn studie en in mijn tijd hier bij het CEW. Daarna zou ik ergens in de watertechnologie een baan willen vinden. Op dit moment heb ik geen idee wat, maar ik weet zeker dat ik het tegen die tijd wel zal weten.
Hij wist al vroeg dat hij iets met watertechnologie wilde doen. Abe Schippers, student Water Technology aan Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein: “Toen we in groep 8 van de basisschool een gastles kregen over Water Technologie van Jan Melein van Wetsus, was ik eigenlijk al verkocht. Hij had allerlei spannende demo’s mee die ik erg interessant vond.”
Welke studierichting doe je precies bij HVHL?
“Ik doe Chemische Technologie met als Major Water Technology. Met beestjes en natuur heb ik minder affiniteit, Milieukunde en Biotechnologie vielen daarom af. CT is technischer en dat ligt me goed.”
Hoe en wanneer kwam je met het CEW in aanraking?
Dat was aan het begin van het 2e studiejaar, toen we stage moesten lopen voor Water Technology. Onze SLB’er (Stage Loopbaan Begeleider) was enthousiast over het CEW en zodoende ben ik daar een keer op gesprek gegaan. Ze hadden een leuk project en er was een klik, dus we zijn met elkaar in zee gegaan.”
Welk project heb je gedaan bij het CEW?
“Ik heb me bezig gehouden met het ontzouten van zeewater middels Reverse Osmosis. Er waren op dat moment ook nog drie studenten werkzaam bij het CEW vanuit de studierichting Milieukunde. We hebben elkaar regelmatig geholpen als er mankracht nodig was bij een project. Zo heb ik bijvoorbeeld ook geholpen bij een project over het indrogen van slib. Dat maakte mijn stage erg afwisselend.”
Wat vond je leuk aan werken bij het CEW?
“De vrijheid, je hebt je eigen project en bent veel praktisch en zelfstandig bezig. Maar als je er even niet meer uitkomt, dan is er altijd wel iemand in de buurt die je verder kan helpen.”
Wat vond je moeilijk en/ of minder leuk aan het project?
“De theorie is goed te doen, maar de praktijk is soms best lastig. Je weet wel wat je wilt testen maar hoe kun je dit zo eenvoudig en goedkoop mogelijk doen? Daar komen onverwachte facetten bij kijken die je niet uit studieboeken haalt en dat maakt zo’n stage erg leerzaam.”
Wat zijn je toekomstplannen?
“Eerst wil ik natuurlijk afstuderen. Mijn afstudeerproject zou ik graag ergens buiten de drie noordelijke provincies doen. Misschien kan ik in de tussentijd bij het CEW nog een leuke bijbaan vinden om op een nuttige manier wat bij te verdienen. Wat ik na mijn afstuderen wil doen weet ik nog niet precies. Op dit moment vind ik drinkwater een interessant onderwerp. Misschien ga ik aan de slag bij een drinkwaterbedrijf als Vitens.”
