In the Administrative Agreement “Oparbeidzje foar Fryslân” the province describes the need to limit nutrient loss and strive for a good soil-food-fertilizer cycle. In this context, we take a closer look at the chain surrounding GFT (fruit, vegetable and garden waste). After all, vegetable, fruit and food scraps as well as small garden waste contain valuable nutrients. Within a cyclical soil-food-fertilizer cycle, it is therefore important to utilize these GFT nutrients to feed the agricultural soil.

Current practices don’t support this goal. We aim to map the chain, identify needed interventions, and address financial implications. As some parties benefit from the current system, a financing strategy is essential for a circular approach.

Against this background, we aim to provide a report consisting of 3 sub-products:

a) Analysis: analysis of the current GFT chain;
b) Intervention proposal: description of desired interventions within the GFT chain;
c) A financing strategy*: financial considerations for a circular way of working.

*Students lacking a financial background will collaborate alongside a student with this profile.
